Is your pet stressed? How can you help?

Updated: 5 days ago

Every time you get your luggage ready for a long vacation, your dog starts pacing around and crying?

Did you know that with time even our pets have evolved to feel stressed about certain things? One of the few useless traits they gained from us humans!

So, how do we know that our pet is stressed?

They show some very obvious changes in their behavior, or some body language signs and some subtle changes in their routine.

For our barking friends, some of these signs could be-

  • Pacing around continuously or signs of restlessness

  • Panting without heat or exertion

  • Excessive licking or grooming throughout the day, especially if its on a particular spot

  • Unusual barking, whining, or growling

  • Tail tucked between the legs, pinned-back ears, or trembling body

  • Accidents indoors despite being potty trained

  • Frequent yawning or lip licking without reason

  • Avoiding interaction or hiding

  • Uneasiness or inability to sleep

Such behavior can easily be mistaken as bad behavior but often, your dog is simply overwhelmed and doesn’t know how else to ask for help. As their parent, its our responsibility to understand our pets!

For our meows, some of these signs could be-

Cats are excellent at hiding their emotions so it can get more difficult to notice their signs of stress. However, some of the very obvious signs are-

  • Becoming reclusive or hiding more than usual

  • Overgrooming, leading to bald spots or irritated skin

  • Litter box avoidance or inappropriate urination

  • Excessive scratching or territorial behavior

  • Sudden aggression or changes in social behavior

  • Vomiting, loss of appetite, or digestive issues

  • Sudden change in sleeping spot could signal

What could have caused the stress?

It is necessary to reverse calculate the cause of stress in order to help your child feel less insecure. Remember, their peace of mind is just as important as ours is.

Some of the causes of stress could be-

Understanding the why behind your pet’s stress is just as important as spotting the signs. Common causes include:

1. Changes in Environment

Pets are creatures of habit, and even small environmental changes can throw them off. So, make sure u pay special attention to your dog when you shift your house.

2. Loud Noises or Crowds

Almost every dog gets overwhelmed by fireworks, thunderstorms, and other loud noises.

3. Separation Anxiety

Some pets feel deeply anxious when left alone for long hours or after a routine change (like returning to work after WFH).

4. New Family Members or Pets

A new baby, roommate, or even another pet can disrupt your pet's sense of territory or attention.

5. Illness or Injury

Pain or discomfort, especially when hidden, can manifest as stress or irritability. Always consider a vet visit if behavioral changes are sudden.

6. Lack of Stimulation

Boredom is underrated. Pets need mental and physical exercise. Without it, they may develop anxiety or destructive habits.

How to Help Your Stressed Pet

You can help your pet feel safe and calm by trying these techniques:

  • Stick to a routine: Pets thrive on predictability.

  • Create a safe space: A quiet, cozy corner can work wonders.

  • Engage with play: Toys, puzzles, walks, and attention reduce anxiety.

  • Be patient: Let them come to you on their terms.

  • See a vet: If the signs persist or escalate, rule out any health problems.

When you bring in a pet at home, it becomes a family member and hence your responsibility. They may not be able to voice their stress but their body speaks enough for them. We need to learn to understand and listen to it, and respond to it with love and patience. A little validation is all what every soul craves for.

At the end of the day, you’re not just a pet parent. You’re their whole world.
